Familiarize yourself and your family with the odor of gas.
Natural gas is naturally odorless. That distinctive "gas"
smell is a chemical, called Mercaptan, which we add to make it
easier for you to detect the gas if there is a leak.
If you smell a faint odor of natural gas in your home, you may
find the problem is as simple as a pilot light out or a
partially open burner valve. Check to see. If the odor is strong
however, you should leave the house immediately.
- ...Don't light a match or candle to try to find the leak yourself.
- ...Don't flip a light switch or use any other electrical equipment.
- ...Do contact the gas company from
outside your home by cell or a neighbor's telephone, not your own.
